Story behind the song
This song dates back to about 1995. It uses a single visual image to connect three separate moments in my life. . .moments that were highly emotionally charged. The song is about remembering without being nostalgic, keeping these moments alive, regardless of the dangers.
Lyrics
Copperheads I remember. .. Walking through the woods with the sun at our backs Kicking up the leaves down the well-beaten track Then we’d reach the water’s edge that would wash away our souls We’d jump from the ledge with nothing to fear, but. . . Copperheads Or moccasins Swimming from beneath the trees Those copperheads Are now long dead Oh why do those summer days Go by like the breeze I remember. . . Walking in the night with the moon at our backs Listening for the train so that we could get off the tracks Then we’d reach the bridge, sit there in the darkness With our wishes, hope, and secrets with nothing there to fear, but... Copperheads Or moccasins Crawling from beneath the tracks Copperheads Those memories aren’t dead I want to remember. . . I don’t want to go back I remember. . . Walking through the woods in the springtime air Me, all mixed emotion; you with your fiery hair Then all was forgotten but the magic of the day I left you with the memories of those dark and secret ways And the warning to watch for. . . Copperheads Or moccasins Crawling beneath the leaves Copperheads Has it all been said? The magic never leaves The magic never leaves
