Still You Stay I can see you slipping farther Down a road you never chose, And the emptiness it offers, Though you try to hide it, shows. As a farmer plows a rocky field, It’s a crooked row he hoes; When you sow your seed in sorrow, It’s a bitter fruit that grows... And so it goes...so it goes. A gentle drop of dreams Can stop what’s left of what is real. For a moment you forget how bad you feel. A whisper, soft, to someone Often helps you to conceal That time is like the turning of the wheel... Your time is like the turning of the wheel. Heartstrings stretched so taut— So little time until they tear— Leave you looking out the window from your chair. To think of how you’ve tried so hard, But still there’s nothing there, Leaves you dry-eyed and crying in despair... Leaves you dry-eyed, crying, dying as you stare, “It’s just not fair...it’s just not fair!” To cease your pain you’d even change The darkness into day And run away— You’re sure that it would go away If you could only run away, But still you stay...still you stay! Though you know There’s nothing left to say, Still you stay...still you stay. © 1974 Tim McMullen All Rights Reserved
