Just me. Just songs.
I was born with an undiagnosable brain dysfunction, having seizures, and with blue skin dur to oxygen deprivation. I would spend much of my youth on strong, mind-altering medication, I would ultimately end up being declared fully disabled on psychiatric grounds, and I've had to be committed to five different psychiatric facilities in three different states. These days, the primary thrust of my overall creative efforts is the advocacy work that I seek to do for the mentally ill and the mentally disabled. These are my songs.

Story behind the song
It was a Tuesday evening in September 2008 and our local small town county fair had just kicked off this week with a big “small town parade” downtown. We took the kids and had a blast watching it all. Afterward, between the following Wednesday evening and Saturday morning, I was able to put this lyric together…it’s kind of cool in that it pretty much describes what happened over the course of the parade, every line rooted in what went by us…with a few extra lines tossed in just for fun. And then my good friend singer/musician/producer Tony Atkinson picked it up and had the demo that you see here fully produced just two months later...and I think that his production does a perfect job of capturing what was going on that day and the feelings that were flowing so strongly through everybody at the parade that day. Sometimes, it's just hard to beat a small town... :-)
Lyrics
The Small Town Parade Verse 1: At five o’clock The traffic stopped Not a sound was made Then from the hush We felt the rush Of the small town parade Then sirens wailed Cheers filled the air My heart was racing like wild As we watched the band I took your hand You looked at me and smiled Chorus: I held you near Music filled the air The band played a serenade It was like they knew I was lost in you Like a shadow in the shade Of the small town parade Verse 2: Floats filled the scene And a beauty queen Went by in a fancy car To whistles from boys Girls screamed with joy When they saw a rodeo star Fire trucks roared My spirit soared As we shared a kiss It never seemed In my wildest dreams The day would turn out like this Chorus: I held you near Music filled the air The band played a serenade It was like they knew I was lost in you Like a shadow in the shade Of the small town parade Repeat Chorus The Small Town Parade (c) 2008 Lyrics by Ray Bertram Music by Tony Atkinson
