Story behind the song
I was inspired by some poetry, and I pictured a sequence of events in my mind, and thus came the lyrics. The story is about a solitary man out in a barren land in a stormy night. He is cold, and the only shelter he can make is a hole in the ground. He digs a hole, a shelter, and then stares up at the skies in boredom. Later on, after hours of watching the skies and covering himself in dirt to keep warm, the skies clear to reveal a perfect black sky marked with a million tiny stars. The stars, burning as hot as they are many light years away, cannot provide warmth for him. He dies of hypothermia, and when he awakens he finds himself in hell. He is there, and accepts it, because he was a man of many sins, which got him exiled. He was banned to the deadlands to die. The hole he made was his own grave. Once he steps out of the gates of death (the grave) into the next world, he finds the trees are burning and he is in hell.
Lyrics
Upon the stones In the land so barren Save for dead trees A man covered in black The moon reluctantly Shines down upon this land Hiding behind Stormclouds The winds blow Enraged by his presence As he burrows in to the dirt And stares at the murky skies The ground is dead cold The skies clear The stars shine through They are dead cold as well He drifts away Awakens to find the skies Now a color of blood He rises from his tomb The trees once rotting Now burn away Into encompassing black fog
