John came home from the war, two years of battle-scars in his head
stopped off at the base for a drink with some old friends
Pulled up a chair and he asked 'em "how the hell have things been?"
and if he'd tried, well, he couldn'ta asked a worse thing

Bob leaned forward, looked him in the eye, said "d'ya realize how much
                                                         time went by
Sometimes things change and you can’t take ‘em back that
pretty young woman you left behind got real lonesome fell outta line
Went out one night dancin’ with ya best friend Jack"

The mornin’ sun’s breakin’ over North Carolina
Every day’s a new day in this town
Don't put your faith in seekin' any kind of sweet justice, cos in
Franklin County somebody's goin' down oh in
 Franklin County somebody's goin' down
John said "man, how could she stray,I never thought she'd do me this way"
worst part was he weren't the only one she had, there was
Tommy, Roger and Billy-Bob too, John said "man, now what can I do"
"I really love her, but this is hurtin' me real bad"

He headed home to find out why She couldn’t be faithful as time went by
But his Chevy ran out of gas on the old highway, when a
truck like his drove by real fast, Jack didn’t see John in the grass
Took him over an hour to walk the rest of the way
He opened the door and in the back room, 'neath the
light of a Carolina full moon
the bodies of Rosie and Joe, and all he wanted to know
was lyin' on the floor right in front of him

Jack got off and John’s in jail, and Bob’s wonderin’ how in the hell
This could happen to a good man like his friend John, he
served his country and he did it well, now a cheatin' woman’s got him
                                                      sittin' in a cell
If it can happen to him, it can happen to anyone
