This song was a breakthrough on both fronts. Lyrically, it is more direct than previous songs. Musically, I broke away from simple chords and began working with runs. These became a trademark, of sorts, in my songwriting.

Heidi Wolfson is a Philadelphia singer-songwriter. In her fourth decade of making music, Heidi is taking a slightly softer approach... but her music remains vocally interesting and the lyrics are definitely worth checking out. If you like Patti Smith, you will probably like Heidi. Have fun and thanks for listening.

Story behind the song
I moved away from home at a young age (17), and was free-floating in the world, with little to no parental support. For the most part, it was exactly what I needed to do. I lived in a room at 13th and Pine. There were no cell phones or computers at this time, and I certainly couldn't afford a telephone. I would check in with my mother by payphone, every so often. In this song, I simply expressed missing my mom.
Lyrics
Mother and Daughter (1977) Bass run from G down to Em I’ve spat at you in my hardest times But we made the climb, Mama we made the climb I’ve wanted to reach you all along But life, up until now, has made it seem like such a crime C Cm Mama you know, we’ll never experience unity You and me But now I can say I love you I love you in my own way And I can’t believe, it’s so easy to say I’ve always meant to tell you how much I respect your making the break Yet you wonder, do I think it a mistake? I’ve always meant to tell you lots of things But I usually wind up, not saying anything Sometimes I get so lonely I get so lonely, and I wonder Are you still there? I scrape up a dime and let it ring a few times But what would I do if one day the dime went through And you really weren’t there Anywhere The simplest thing that could ever be Is the love and the sadness between you and me If you were listening right now You would say with a sigh Heidi, how many times must I tell you To say you and I? Mama you know, we’ll never experience unity You and me But now I can say I love you I love you in my own way And I can’t believe It’s so easy to say
