Kokopelli’s Water Dance

Kokopelli played his flute to remind us that love is magic. Kokopelli is a legend in Native American Folklore a magical flute player much like the legends of Pan and the Pied Piper. Many mystical stories are told about his abilities to mesmerize people and to transform himself spiritually. When the magical flute player came to a village with his bag of seeds on his back it was good luck and meant a good harvest that year. The Shaman (wise man) would tell many tales and teach the tribe about many things. Evoking the spirits of the rivers Kokopelli played his water dance of fertility and inspiration mesmerizing all that listened.

   Kokopelli was a proud Toltec who came to Aztlan. The inhabitants of Aztlan were the Pueblo Nations' farmers and cliff dwellers who depended on the Thunder-being and the Whirling Rainbow to feed the three sisters--Corn, Squash , and Beans -- so the people could live.  It had been a very dry year and trust that rain was coming had worn thin.
     Kokopelli's music was said to bring fertility to the land and to the people. He did not have a humpback, but carried a bundle on his back of sacred objects, seed and Medicine he brought for trade. Kokopelli wove the sound of the magical flute into a potion that touched the hearts of young and old alike. His flute seemed to transport you through time and space. 
      In my dreams his flutes would glow in the fire light and he used this reflective light , as well as the sound, as his body swayed to mesmerize his audience. When he finished with his flute, he wrapped it like a child in brightly woven material and offered it to the Great Star Nation. "This flute carries the music of the stars to the Earth Mother and calls for the Thunder-beings to make love to her" he cried. "This union will bring a child to the People who will one day lead them back to the Stars" The cool rush of the wind would stir up the embers of the fire into a whirlwind filling the night sky with star like sparks. The Thunder-beings called out that the rain was about to begin. The Fire Sticks gave quite a light show and gave off enough light to light up the sky for everyone to see the masses of Cloud People who had gathered in the heavens to answer Kokopelli's call. 
        Surely the long-awaited rain would feed the Three Sisters and the people would live. Kokopelli called out for everyone to gather up all their clay pots so the moisture could be collected. Everyone was running to and fro in a great frenzy gathering and setting pots scurrying around preparing for the great rain except for one maiden who stood marveling at the lighting. She was beautiful, innocent and had piqued his curiosity. "Why do you not gather your pots to catch the rain" he asked. "They have been placed in a high place in the Mesa" she answered. "Why are your pots already in place" he asked. "Because your flute called to me when you came up the canyon and told me you would bring rain. I am called Ice Flower of the Winter Clan of White Corn" she answered. "So you are the one" he said.
           Kokopelli placed the flute, wrapped like a child in Ice Flower's arms as a symbol that this woman would share his music and would be the mother of the child that would lead its people back to the stars. Kokopelli spoke to them of a time before the Creation when each person was a spark of Fire from the Great Mystery's Eternal Flame and had fallen to Earth to seed Mother with fertile thought, ideas and actions. He told them they would all one day become like Fireflies and return to the Great Sky Nation. Did Kokopelli and his people leave the Earth to live in the Great Star Nation. If so his fertility and abundance shines down on our world every night.
