The song is a story, set the morning after a night out with a best friend. Anything that happens in the morning is in present tense, and anything that happened the night before, past. As for the line, "Eyes like the sun/we set in the morninglight" is saying that, "Even though neither of us are tired, and even though it's morning, we didn't get any sleep last night, and we should maybe attempt at an hour or two." Any confusion brought on by the lyrics is intentional. I like things enigmatic; it creates conversation pieces.
