Story behind the song
A soft rock tribute to the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic, Ship of Dreams and Cries releases late January 2012. Songwriter Rachel Hays drops the worldwide debut with a dedication to descendants of the passengers of the infamous ship. The chilling number reminds us of the magnitude of the tragedy, while also honoring the brevity of the thousands of individuals who experienced the horrifying events of April 15, 1912. The sinking of "the unsinkable ship" is one of the most shocking and memorable happenings of the 20th century, and Ship of Dreams and Cries offers a perfect mix of melody, lyrics, emotions, and story-telling to preserve Titanic's impact on the hearts of millions around the world. While experimenting with new melodies in a writing session in November 2011, Hays unexpectedly found herself playing the tune of what is now Ship of Dreams and Cries, and about twenty minutes thereafter, she had finished the lyrics. "This wasn't something I planned," Hays said. "It just came out of me, and it wasn't until later that evening that it struck me--the 100th anniversary of the Titanic's sinking is just around the corner. I knew I had to get into the studio as soon as possible." Hays recorded the song in early January 2012 in Columbia, Tennessee at Arctic Sound Studios. Owner John Bass engineered the tune, and musicians included guitarist Bobby McKee, bass player John Howard, and drummer Jared Ribble, with Hays on keyboards and lead and back-up vocals. She said it was her favorite recording session to date. "I feel so blessed to have worked with John Bass, and I was blown away by the pure talent of the musicians," Hays said. After Ship of Dreams and Cries was written and recorded, Hays said she knew it was fate to release it. "We've all seen the documentaries of the Titanic played over and over throughout the years, not to mention the major James Cameron film, Titanic, and it can be easy to get desensitized to the very real terror and tragedy of the story," she said, "so writing this song gave me a unique emotional connect." Hays added, "The memory of the Titanic, the writing experience, and recording with these fantastic musicians--all of it together had me in tears on my way home from the studio. I just couldn't wait to share it with the world." rachel@rachelhays-music.com © Rachel Hays, 2012.
