RECORDING=PERSONAL STUDIO Musicians Renee Safier and Andy Hill along with a world-class band--have organized a tribute to the songs of Bob Dylan since 1991. Dozens of artists perform over 50 songs with no repeats all day at this famous festival
Soulful Beach Groove music following in the footsteps of Van Morrison, Eva Cassidy, Bill Withers, Jack Johnson, Elton John and Sting... with a French twist!
Story behind the song
I have had the privilege of playing at the Dylanfest since 2009. It is such a unique event that I thought it was worthy of its own song.
Lyrics
In 1991, the party started at the Hermosa Saloon with Andy and Renee
It was Bob Dylan’s 50th birthday
Now it’s over two decades later and it keeps getting bigger and better
And though the times are changing, may it stay young forever
It’s a musical revival, a magical festival
A spiritual carnival, a one-of-a-kind original
More than 50 performers, local folks and world travelers
Singing over 60 songs with no repeats all day long
Forget your worries and your stress
Feed the heart beating in your chest
Walk, fly or motor West to the Annual Dylanfest
Jimmy on the saxophone, cute girls on trumpet and trombone
Playing “Everybody Must Get Stoned” over the head of Bob Malone
That tangled up wizard of keyboards is a centerfield in the game of Rock and Roll For Old Man Fogy Down The Road
Joe Caccavo, Kevin Hicks, Dave Batti, Kirk Makin
Pull all the strings that need plucking in outfits that’ll leave you chuckling
The Mighty Quinn is blowin’ in the wind saying it ain’t me, Baby Blue
Knocking on Heaven’s door with my tambourine
Officially, Bob’s never been there but some reliable people swear
They saw him sitting comfortably in a folding chair
Chatting up the Chuckinator goofing on the imitators
The impersonators and the inevitable misinterpreters
Watching characters in costumes inspired by a thousand tunes
His whole career represented Folk, Electric, Country, Gospel Phase
The artists and the audience are celebrating and giving thanks
For his eloquence and his most profound influence
Nothing could stop me unless
I am dead or under arrest
No, you won’t find me anywhere else
But the Annual Dylanfest… oh, the Dylanfest
Masterminding the festival, brilliant Andy Hill does it all
Harmonica, piano, guitar and vocal
Today John Hoke is just holding down the beat
But, though he goes about it very quietly, his music is all over your TV
Marty Rifkin is the real deal, a genius of production and pedal steel
Just ask Petty and Springsteen: they can’t touch him even in Nashville
At the heart of this hurricane, Renee keeps everybody sane
A warm and smiling Southern Dame with a voice like sugar cane
Every year on and off the stage, there’s a trusty crew stepping up their game
Without them it wouldn’t be the same, wish I could mention all their names
Trish Gomez and a ragtag dance company in golden headbands and jewelry
Swing to the free-form poetry of Don Agronsky
Patti Orbeck, Terry Buck, Jack McGee
Karen Nash, Arlen Rimmer, James Lee Stanley
Chase Keepe Hill, Fuzzy Thurston, Frosbite Jones
Tess Inman, Jackie Sackheim, Bill Coluantoni
I could just go on an on but this song would be
As long as “Like a Rolling Stone”
Brothers and sisters, (say it with me) we are blessed
As the Lord himself is my witness
I hereby promise, pledge and attest
To be at the Annual Dylanfest… the Dylanfest
Forget your worries and your stress, lift the burdens off your chest
Let nothing stop you unless you are dead or under arrest
Promise, pledge and attest to attend this mystical hippie vision quest
So walk, run, fly or motor West
To the Annual Dylanfest… oh, yeah, the Dylanfest…
Talking about the Dylanfest… see you at the Dylanfest
