Story behind the song
I wrote it as an exercise for a songwriting forum
It's about someone that I knew long ago.
Lyrics
Sharing a pizza and our dreams.
At fifteen we planned our futures over ice cream.
You impressed me with that Russian folk dance.
It was companionship, not romance.
Your sister said you'd always been that way.
But she really didn't know what to say.
Back then it was hard to find
Anyone to share what was on your mind.
Years passed and I saw you on the street.
You made a better looking woman than me.
By then our friends had mostly scattered.
But you'd found some things that really mattered.
In Speedos and headphones you would skate downtown.
In your private world, no one else was around.
Strong and graceful, you danced on skates.
People watched with admiration or hate.
The last few months you could barely walk.
Then you couldn't lift the phone to talk.
Gone at forty-two. The newspaper said
"Sidewalk skater dies of AIDS."
