Dr. Thomas G. Allen
Added a couple new songs. Bring Her Home and You Shine Your Love. Comments are always welcome.
I am a retired Presbyterian minister living in Temple, TX who loves to write contemporary Christian music. I am currently teaching History of Religions I (= OT) the Gatesville Prison as an adjunct of Central Texas College as well as providing occasional pulpit supply in the Temple Area.
Big thanks to Kirk Fischer for providing this site:)
Story behind the song
On Father's day I was missing my daughter who is studying aboard and began to sort of play with that idea. Among the scenarios was that of a spouse praying for their loved on mission. Once I honed in on that, the song more or less wrote itself.
Since I first posted this I have recently reworked the lyrics, and melodically added a bridge. I hope you like the changes.
Lyrics
Bring her home – thomas allen
A little girl watches mom deploy, waving stars and stripes,
Speeches, a band, hugs and good-bye noise,
the car-ride home is quiet
Headlights flash by dad's empty stare
In the back seat teardrops are prayers
“Bring her home, dear Lord,” she prays
“Wrap her in your arms today
Keep her close by your side
Bring her home, dear Lord,” she cries and prays
Night after night daddy fights for sleep in his lonely bed
Sometimes he drifts off to the days they were newly weds
Tonight he dreams of i.e.d.'s
Hard on his knees, "Not her, Lord, please!"
“Bring her home, dear Lord,” he prays
“Wrap her in your arms today
Keep her close by your side
Bring her home, dear Lord,” he cries and prays
A little girl hand in hand with dad, seated by a grave
The guns salute, Old Glory's folded for the fallen brave
With tears and fears, they struggle now
To face the years, and trust somehow
To pray
“Bring her home, dear Lord, we pray
Wrap her in your arms today
Till we join her by your side
Home again, dear Lord, we cry and pray, we pray”
