Story behind the song
This is one of a number of lullabies I wrote when my sons were young. The tune was running through my head as I was mowing the lawn (more than twenty years later, now). So when I finished, I recorded a quick, one-take, version in my music room. Dandelions have always reminded me of the carefree days of youth.
Lyrics
Dance Across the Moon Daffodils and dandelions Smile at the golden sun. Shadows play upon the grass Until the day is done. Evening stars begin to shine As daylight fades to gray. Don't be afraid, just sing this song To chase your fears away. When you start to worry Just hum this little tune. Use your mind to fly away And Dance Across the Moon. If it seems you're all alone With nothing much to do With no friends to share your day I've got a trick for you. Close your eyes, relax your mind And travel far away To that vast, enchanted place Where elves and faeries play. When you're feeling lonely Just hum this little tune. Use your mind to fly away And Dance Across the Moon. (gender neutral version in parentheses as in recording) What do you want to be my son (to be my child) When you become a man? (when youth draws to an end?) Do you want to sail the seas Or work upon the land? Dream your dreams, and live your life With grace and harmony. Do your best and you will surely Reach your destiny. When you're feeling happy Just hum this little tune. Use your mind to fly away And Dance Across the Moon. repeat. Unpublished work (c) 1989 John R. Whitney
