Story behind the song
The bass player in the band and I did a canoe trip across Hamlin Lake near Ludington, Michigan. The lake is a man-made lake and when you are near shore you can see where trees once flourished..
Lyrics
The bottom of the bayou reminds me of a time
When all the trees were living and a raccoon could do just fine
The bottom of the bayou exhibits fish galore
When the trees were all living swimming would be quite the chore
Where the land was once free is now an aquatic domain
Where the land was once free a dam with retain
Where the land was once 2x
I looked to the bottom and the water was quite clear
The lake had been conquered and home was drawing near
I looked to the bottom and saw a time now past
The lake had been conquered I was at home at last
Solo
Chorus
We left the bayou and headed out to sea
The bottom disappeared I could see nothing beneath me
We left the bayou and the shore far behind
The bottom disappeared but the dunes we would soon find.
