Story behind the song
The album is here: http://jiguma.bandcamp.com/album/signs-of-life-2 On our last trip to Europe, I spent time in Switzerland writing, but we also spent time with friends in Amsterdam. Now I'm not a city bboy - not any more - but Amsterdam really took my fancy. So many interesting places to visit, and such an interesting "feel" - so different to other cities. On top of that, getting around is so easy, and language difficulties are non-existent because most everyone seems to speak English (a good thing, because Dutch sounds pretty impenetrable to me). The lyrics here are as tangential as ever – I’m not totally certain what they are about, although I hear references to our friends Andrew and Judy in there. Let’s just say they appeared on the page in a moment of writer’s block and I thought they might work. I really just wrote the verses as an excuse for the chorus. No, I’m not even sure of what “Crossing some Amsterdam lines” means – but you have to admit it has a slightly dangerous, but poetic ring to it ? John Libby (you know him as “ktb”) plays the main organ part and the electric piano. Excellent tracks John – thanks! As usual, I'm playing everything else, including the drum track (midi). Thanks also to my wife Jan for some great harmony parts (and for putting up with me while I made the songs for the album). credits from the CD "Signs Of Life", released 27th April 2010 John Libby - electric piano and main organ part Jan Porter - backing vocals Neil Porter - guitars, keys, bass, drums, vocals and production
Lyrics
AMSTERDAM ©2010 Neil Porter I don’t think I told you about Amsterdam I’m not talking about girls in the night You can lose yourself in Amsterdam It’s a city with beautiful light We can meet at that bruin in Jordaan We can drink one to interesting times You know I’ll get back to Amsterdam I’ll be crossing some Amsterdam lines Living in Amsterdam Losing in Amsterdam Winning in Amsterdam I’ll be crossing some Amsterdam lines Get out of my depth in Haarlem Sweep me out in a parallel stream The invisible man in Amsterdam I’ll be living a parallel dream We could meet like spies in Centraal Feel alive, getting ready to roll Find some signs of life in Amsterdam We’ll be singing some Amsterdam soul Living in Amsterdam Losing in Amsterdam Winning in Amsterdam I’ll be crossing some Amsterdam lines Living in Amsterdam Crossing some Amsterdam lines Losing in Amsterdam Crossing some Amsterdam lines Winning in Amsterdam Crossing some Amsterdam lines
