Story behind the song
‘Abstract’ was written and composed by Me(Rahul Sainani) at around 3 am when I was preparing for my class 12 board exams. Many people might think that the lyrics are based on some love song but actually, the song mainly relates to the “Pre-exam” period which all students go through, this is the period where the student has to study and prepare for his/her exams. The song is about the time when during this “Pre-exam” period, you spend your whole day doing nothing, just wasting your time and lazing around. Then suddenly when the whole day passes you by and at the end of the day you suddenly realize that you’ve lost one whole day and that’s when it hits you that you’ve run out of time and feel totally lost. You try to cover up and catch up with the lost time but you’re not able to. You’re just stuck in a web and don’t know what to do. This song originally sounded like a pop act but because of Shardul’s tirelessly irritating habit of contradicting everything the rest of the band members do or say, we finally gave in to his constant nagging to make the song heavier and angrier and made a HELL OF A LOT of changes in the song and finally the song had a punchier and heavier feel to it. All these changes were discussed or should I say ‘fought over’ and implemented in the song, with John trying to figure out the lead riffs, Me trying to figure out what rhythm pattern sounds better, Bharat trying to decide whether to use a funky slap pop or a heavier tone on the bass, Rohan trying to get over a hang over from a party the night before and trying to get his vocal chords in tune by having loads of adrak(Ginger) and warm water and as for Shardul, well……nagging and contradicting as usual(hehe). All this was done in the studio itself. But the result of all this was the making of an awesome song. We guys were still confused as to what the name of the song should be, so we kinda decided on abstract as a temporary name but then decided to stick to it. Thus ‘Abstract’ was born.
