Santana Groove was originally called Santana Jam, mostly because the lead riff was a spin off from "Samba Pa Ti". Mike had recently worked on learning new songs, this was one of them. One day while jamming, Mike showed Josh the lead riff. Well Josh heard some simularity in a rhythm he had been playing around with. He began to play his rhythm and Mike altered the lead and the song came together. Oringinaly Josh wanted a faster more funk/metal type rythm to fit, however; Mike was opposed. One day while jamming on the newly acuired music gear (what VSG currently owns). Mike and Josh decided to try and record Santana Jam. Josh hung the microphone in the air and adjusted the volumes and reverb on the amps to get an airy sound. Mike found his perfect distortion. Mike wanted to run a few practice scales just to warm up. Josh noticed Mike was just jamming by himself, Josh hit the record button and joined in. The funny part of the recording is that it was a live recording done in one take. And all of it being improv. You can actually hear Josh's Father dropping a bunch of stuff in the middle of the recording. Yet that didn't stop them from making one of their smoothest groove songs. So they changed it's name to one more fitting..Santana Groove.
