Story behind the song
I'm guilty of attempting melodies which can sound more like background lines rather than clearcut melodies alot, but I guess the reason I write like that is a matter of survival in that I want to be able to co...nvey a groove, the harmony & melody without the aid of horn or even keys in a trio setting as well. It's so tough to depend on guys to show up at rehearsal or play a gig with this stuff because fusion doesn't pay, so I have to be careful of writing melody in which I can't hit the harmony, or harmony parts that muddy up a good melody. So I am left with the decision to write the tune to where a melody & harmony can be conveyed as a trio. Hence a "groove chord/melody" concept. Hopefully it'll work someday. The work flow kinda went like this. The accent pattern at the tip top on through is based on alot of the 80's soul/r&b grooves, while the voicings are a variation of Steve Howe's part on the outro to "Starship Trooper". I then mimic the accents w/the bass drum/openclosed hh, and then created a linear phrasing pattern with ghosted snare . I learned how to do that from stealing alot of beats from David Garibaldi's future sounds & the Funkifying the Clave book, particularly the Songo groove, although this is not a songo pattern. Then I found ways to add & subtract off of those accents for the bass line On the "B" section, it reminded me alot of "When the world is running down" , so I kinda stole the bass line, and then manipulated, added, or subtracted accents The "C" section just kinda happened one day, don't know how I an rationalize that !
