Story behind the song
I wrote this song for a friend who had been dumped. It was about why they should stay apart. I was hoping this would keep them apart. Unfortunately, or fortunately, depending on who you are, they got back together, and this song is partially to blame. He loved it so much he learned it and sang it to her and that was one of many things that eventually lead to their reunion. But, other factors lead to their "Blessed Union". Scott Peltz's back-up vocals on this track are simply devine. He was so much more professional in the studio than I was during the recording of the album. If by professional, one means "perfectionistic". Seriously, he's just so damned talented.
Lyrics
Philosophers Hey you, Little Girl, where’d you go? Where did you leave your faith? Did you replace Sunday best with a wetsuit to go catch a wave? Did you have to escape? Philosophers took you away. They don’t see you on Sundays. At first, we were shocked- pirate ship of youth tied up at the docks! But we were convinced he’d be your Boy Scout prince. But we were wrong, since, he was gone for too long, you forgot Nephi’s fine prints. Philosophers took you away. They don’t see you on Sundays. Who could have guessed that you’d never be dressed in white by his side, or at least head by his chest? Maybe it’s for the best. Could you ever rest daily dusting his old hope chest? Could you have left the coast or the heartbeat from equine’s breast? Philosophers took you away. They don’t see you on Sundays.
