This was based on a joke between my friend Marshall and I. We were talking about how he was pretending to be conceited, unlike my friend Jon, who actually was. Marshall said "I'm not quite there... at the peak of conceit." And I said, "When you reach the peak, plant your flag in Jon's place." So the song began, with Marshall contributing a little, as I recall. I'd like to add however, that although Jon is conceited, it's not without good reason.
The more I think about writing this song, the more I feel like, although Marshall was thinking of Jon, I was thinking of someone else, but I can't remember who. I'll let y'all know when I solve this mystery.
