Story behind the song
Just another sad song about a love that fades as summertime draws to a close.
Lyrics
At the end of a cool summer, When the sun hadn’t kept its word, We lay by the lake alone, The wind was all we heard. “Looks like a storm,” you said With the trace of a bitter smile “I know what you mean,” I said “But let’s stick around a while” The coffee we’d brought with us Had long since gone stale and cold, Our hearts didn’t keep us warm They’d suddenly gotten old. What can we talk about When there’s nothing left to say Let cigarettes speak for us, We’ll exhale the night away. We lay there motionless Both scared of what this meant We watched the waves as they Danced their flow and ebb “It’s like us, don’t you think?” You asked with that bitterness. I couldn’t say anything, We’re not making progress. I can’t help but thinking that This might be a natural end Have we run out of steam at last, Well, I guess that all depends On what we want right now Are our desires separate I can’t speak for you, but then That’s never happened yet. I felt the first drop as it Landed on my forehead You’re not wearing much tonight You’ll probably catch your death You’ve always loved thunderstorms And the smell of the summer air And when lightning lights your face Like the smile that isn’t there. But now the rain betrays our trust And our luck’s run too many miles It’s dumping down sheets on us And weighing down our denial. Buckets of rain bring our Night to a sudden close, We run to my car and huddle In sopping wet clothes, The heater is working hard But it’s not doing us much good We’ve lost the warmth in our Hearts, that’s understood As I drive you home tonight And the sky is thunderous We’re shivering and sundering The night, the summer and us.
