Story behind the song
After waking up before dawn on 01/01/10, this song was created as the sun was rising and completed an hour later.
This is what happens when: 1) you go to bed early on New Year's Eve and miss the ball. 2) habitually wake up early because the kid's aren't up and it's your only time to yourself. 3) just bought yourself a Gretsch for Christmas and try out the AdrenaLinn II plug-in for the first time. 4) commit yourself lyrically to a resolution and end up doing the opposite, as it was one of the busiest years of my life.
It was recorded in Culver City, CA during the first hours of the new year. Vocals were completed in June 2010, in an east-facing room at the Platinum Hotel, Las Vegas (that is also where the cover shot was taken - look closely and you will see an Area 51 jet coming for a landing). Mixed at Eneonycity in Irvine, California.
For you tech-heads who don't buy music anyway: Created and recorded using Reason/Record, Digital Performer and Logic; front end is a Rode NT2A, Avalon 737sp and Apogee Interfaces. Mixed in Logic using the SSL Duende and the UAD-2, with the "new" Studer A800 plug-in.
New Year's resolution: Buy more music. Start with this one.
Lyrics
My eyes open
To a pink sky
Fading into morning
It's New Year's Day
Fresh batch of coffee
Waiting for me
I can feel you
Waiting for me
Waiting for my melody
I don't care anymore
If I get it right
I'm done with trying
Finished with the fight
I'm keeping my mind
On that first daylight
And oh! What a beautiful sight
You can hear it say:
"It's just another year anyway"
Daylight breaks
On this first of the first
I close my eyes and remind myself
Put those resolutions back to their shelf
With you as my witness
I pledge to the newness
The only thing that I will do is
Enjoy myself
'Cause I don't care anymore
If I get it right
I'm done with trying
Finished with the fight
Keeping my mind
On that new daylight
Yes! What a beautiful sight
You can hear it say:
"It's just another year anyway"
My resolve is to not resolve
To undo the things I've done
To live this year as it might be my last one
'cause I don't know
and don't care to know
Where things will go
And I don't care anymore
If I get it right
I'm done with trying
I'm finished with the fight
I'm keeping my mind on that first daylight
Man, what a beautiful sight
You can hear it say:
"It's just another year anyway"
Watch it fly by...
