Story behind the song
In dreams, I sometimes soar over exotic outlands. Two days before we played at Arts in Education, a series of concerts and art activities for the grade school children in our university community, I dreamed the melody and words to this song while bouncing high on the red sands of Mars. Listen, and get in touch with your inner kid--kids of ALL ages love it!
Lyrics
If I were a Martian, I'd grow tall and thin With a huge pair of lungs to breathe the sparse oxygen In the pink atmosphere, and where all of the land Is covered with acres of rusty red sand If I were a Martian, I could bounce up so high 'Cause the pull of Mars' gravity is really quite light And me and my friends Martian leapfrog could play O'er the walls of the canyons tillt he end of the day. Chorus: And at night, the two moons, Phobos and Deimos will rise And I'll watch the third planet, Blue, cross the dark skies Till my four eyes grow heavy; I'll dream while I sleep Of that strange world next door with those oceans so deep. If I were a Martian, I'd live underground In a silicon house in the side of a mound With four parents, two brothers, three sisters, ten pets Eight grandmas, five cousins, four uncles and aunts If I were a Martian, the food I would eat Would be Martian munchables, both crunchy and sweet And I'd never get cavities, 'cause instead of teeth I'd have scissory ridges in my red, pointy beak. Chorus: And at night, the two moons, Phobos and Deimos will rise And I'll watch the third planet, Blue, cross the dark skies Till my four eyes grow heavy; I'll dream while I sleep Of that strange world next door with those oceans so deep. And I'd wonder if kids on that planet have fins Can breathe underwater and live in the ocean In a house made of shells, and what games do they play? Do their families tuck them in bed and kiss them good night At the end of their day?
