Since the restraining orders have kept me away from getting this to Nanci Griffith, I remain at the mercy of Annie & Michelle for the vocals.

My truck broke down on February night between Chicago & Detroit. This song came floating in while waiting for the service station to open and trying not to freeze to death.
The diner is closing. The cars on the freeway
can be seen from the window as she's stacking the chairs.
Following dreams, they're headed for somewhere.
Somewhere is anywhere other than here.
nobody told her that the cost of growing older
would be dreams that don't die, though out of kindness they should.
So she watches the taillights, headed for bright lights.
Watching them leaving and wishing she could.
And the moon it is rising tonight on East Texas.
So close you could touch it if you dared to believe.
But a moon full of dreams is still gone in the morning
and whispers of wonders is all that it leaves.
The job pays her bills and puts food on the table,
clothes on the children and flowers on the grave
of the young man whose picture sits under the counter,
where he still holds the family he's left her to raise.
And the moon it is rising tonight on East Texas.
so close you could touch it if you dared to believe.
ut a moon full of dreams is still gone in the morning,
and whispers of wonders is all that it leaves.
Katy are you ready, I've locked up the cash box
comes a voice from the backroom in a fatherly tone.
It looks like a full moon, let's walk out together.
By choice there is no one who would walk out alone.
And the moon it is rising tonight on East Texas.
So close you could touch it if you dared to believe.
But a moon full of dreams is still gone in the morning.
And whispers of wonders is all that it leaves.
