What Color Is Gone
(©2010 Beckley/Hurst)
Today my little girl was drawing pictures
Coloring in red and blue and green
She did her best to try
To stay within the lines
Her happy face meant everything to me
She said, "I'm drawing you and me and mommy
I hope she's home tomorrow from her trip"
Then her smile became a frown
As she turned and searched around
Then spoke these words through tender, trembling lips
(Chorus):
Daddy, what color is gone
Oh, daddy, what color is gone
When mommy left last week, she told you from now on
You could color her gone
Daddy, what color is gone
I held my breath and tried to keep from cryin'
I turned by head and prayed, Lord, give me strength
Then she ran to me
And hugged me 'round the knees
And said those words that broke my heart again
(Chorus):
Daddy, what color is gone
Oh, daddy, what color is gone
When mommy left last week, she told you from now on
You could color her gone
Daddy, what color is gone
(Bridge):
She checked her crayons one more time
Then her teary eyes looked up at mine
I braced myself for what I knew she'd say
(Chorus):
Daddy, what color is gone
Oh, daddy, what color is gone
When mommy left last week, she told you from now on
You could color her gone
Daddy, what color is gone
Oh, Daddy, what color is gone
