Midnight Curlew
© Sue Bargh 2008
Midnight invites all stars from their rest
To gather above the wading birds nest
No sound from the wind, no cloud in the sky
Rings round the moon as the curlew still cries
Rat on the road disappears in to night
His homestead resides in the chemical light
Beneath Overton Hill and the old driftwood tree
Where the curlew cries out to the midnight sea
Between Overton Hill and the old driftwood tree
Where the curlew cries out to the midnight sea
White breath on the Weaver, white waves on the tide
Hush on pressed lips all quiet inside
In the dark midnight sea is a song deepest blue
The ghost of a shipwreck and cries of curlew
In the dark midnight sea is a song deepest blue
The ghost of a shipwreck …………….. and cries of curlew ……
Turn clockwise the key ignite the road side
Golden the embers of love inside
Leave stars far behind the old day is new
As cries fade to distance for the midnight curlew
Leave stars far behind the old day is new
As cries fade to distance……………. . for the midnight curlew
Leave stars far behind the old day is new
As cries fade to distance for the midnight curlew
