A wistful song that reveals my Roy Orbison fetish...
Story behind the song
I met a woman at a bar one night and we started talking. We really hit it off, and the next thing you know, it was closing time. We wanted to keep talking, so we went to downtown St. Paul and walked around for hours. At one point, we stumbled upon a street where some function had taken place earlier. There were gold stars (cardboard decorations) scattered all over the place. It seemed to make sense to us at the time.
It was a great time...until dawn. Suddenly, she got all weepy and said she had to leave. I never saw her again, and in retrospect, the whole night seemed like a dream. When something like that happens, I have to write a song about it. Your mileage may vary.
Lyrics
There were stars in the street
The night we met
It seemed so commonplace
But it doesn’t seem that way to me now
There’s a shadow in your past
That will not speak it’s name
But if you look at my life
You’ll see it’s the same
And I don’t want to hang you up
Or bring you down
I would just like you
To be around
‘Cause the city was ours on that night
This old town that was so familiar to me
I saw now in a different light
It was you and me and the night
And the city
The city was ours
I can hardly express
The way I feel right now
But I will do my best
To try and make you understand
I’m not the kind of man
These things happen to
I’m just an average guy
Who never finds someone like you
And you don’t have to say a word
I now realize
You answer all my questions
With your eyes
And the city was ours on that night
This old town that was so familiar to me
I saw now in a different light
It was you and me and the night
And the city
The city was ours
Yeah, the city was ours on that night
This old town that was so familiar to me
I saw now in a different light
It was you and me and the night
And the city
The city was ours
