Kyoto Maiko is a simple but elegant instrumental suite that fuses the traditional Japanese style of music with modern western influences
The story of this composition/movement is centered on a young Kyoto Maiko (an apprentice Geisha) who is sold into a Geisha House. Each section of the suite attempts to conjure up a vivid musical description that represents each phase of the young Geishas training. The first movement establishes the setting of Kyoto's Flower Town and the ambience of demure young Minarai and Maiko dancers learning their craft. The second movement sets the piece to meditation and discipline. The third movement is the signature piece which represents a realisation of her skills and a demonstration of the ancient art. The forth reminds us of the setting which then proceeds to melancholy as the young geisha doubts her ability and attempts to gracefully reconcile herself with her lot in life. The fifth movement represents her acceptance and decision to be the best she can be, this piece is followed by a quiet and dignified determination set to the signature movement which she then suddenly explodes into season in full flower. Our little Kyoto Maiko is complete and open for business.
