The tale of a parasitic creature whose quest for the perfect 'home' ends in tragedy...
As with most of the lyrics I write, I came up with an idea for a "story" and then put it into lyrical form. This song was originally written by Jeff and I while we were members of the band, Talisman. It's a very through-composed tune that has no "chorus" per-se--not really any repeating sections, etc. But we like it : )
Vagrant Soul
(LaPolt/Succession)
A lonely soul invaded the land
Wherever he went everything wilted
His flesh perished long before his soul
Living as a parasite, he paid his toll
To replace what was lost
He nullified those who he met
By invading their bodies and minds--He survived. . .
His hatred for the living increased with time
He began to enjoy stripping them of their lives
Thrived on their experiences
Learned from their mistakes
Continual quest for a shelter from disease
All convictions erased from his mind
To identify this entity he would not dare
The sense he once had of what reality held
Shredded and tossed into the wind
The one wisp remaining attacked and destroyed
Parasite to humanity...animated by Death
The asylum he required wore a clever disguise
Wouldn't recognize it until he'd entered its core
He continued inhabiting one person after another
Seeking his truly ideal home
The time soon ended to search for the soul
The intelligence he possessed began to fester
His vision distorted, just beyond his grasp
His search ended vainly...Concluded at last
Withered away slowly and left in his place
A shattered and tortured shell of a man
No one would ever understand
The struggle of the soul to find its place
Is often obstructed and led astray
At length it perishes, grimly distraught
Its quest inconclusive, bereft of all it sought
