It's about the uncertainty of an early date. I never actually waited at a station or an airport for a date.
I wrote the verses to this song in 1972. I have played it solo twice at open-mic nights in Aug 2006. It was after that that I wrote the middle 8, changed the ending to 'airport' and recorded the song at the Sound Room.
v1
Waiting for my baby, hoping that she'll show
Wondering if I'll see her face and wondering if I'll ever see her love
I'm waiting at the station, but I'm not waiting for no train
Mmm, mmm, mmm
v2
The moment I first saw her
Then I knew it had to be
But she tells me not to chase her
That I'm only 23
middle 8
I've been waitin' all my life for you,
Green-eyed girl, now you know that it's true,
My heart's aching to be with you,
My heart's breaking, breaking in two.
v3
Waiting for my baby, hoping that she'll show
Wondering if I'll see her face and wondering if I'll ever see her love
I'm waitin' at the airport
But I'm not waitin' for no plane.
