Home studio copyright version, written in 96' for Julie Carter- Nashville TN. Listen to the banjo and harmonica talk to each other in this up beat shuffle, with a snappy drum groove, and organ/synth pad in the bridge.
I met a really cute, platinum blonde singer in 95’ during my first trip to Nashville TN.
Her name was Julie Carter, and was an excellent vocalist.
Julie mentioned, she was from Memphis.
I wrote a few tunes for her, including BACK TO MEMPHIS.
I did research on Memphis, viewed a video describing the city, and read James Conaway's book- MEMPHIS AFTERNOONS- which gave me ideas for the song.
James tells of his life, growing up in Memphis.
In the first verse, the line "speedin' Greyhound" can refer to the bus line, and also, the Greyhound dog races, at the track in Memphis.

BACK TO MEMPHIS
(c) 2002 Cal written 1996 for Julie Carter Nashville TN
verse
I've been thinkin' about you
Dreamin' all day long
Baby's gone and left me
Time for me to run
Don't need no invitation
Bought tickets for a plane
Faster than a speedin' Greyhound
I'm comin' home again
chorus
Back to Memphis where cotton grows
Back to Memphis where the mighty Mississippi flows
You'll see me there old rockin' chair
Red brick bungalow
Back to Memphis
Memphis is the place that I love
verse
Kicked around in New York
That traffic bothered me
Tried and tried I couldn't find
One sweet Magnolia tree
I think the world of Nashville
Branson has the beat
Hollywood looks good but you'll never find me
Hangin' out on Vine Street
chorus
Back to Memphis where cotton grows
Back to Memphis where the mighty Mississippi flows
Keep your frills I want my Daffodils
Red brick bungalow
Back to Memphis
Memphis is the place that I love
bridge- tempo change
I keep on dreamin' about you
All day long
Downtown blues barbecues
Steamboats chuggin' past the avenues
chorus- modulate
Back to Memphis where cotton grows
Back to Memphis where the mighty Mississippi
flows and flows
You'll see me there in my old rockin' chair
Red brick bungalow I'm goin'
Back to Memphis back
Back to Memphis I'm goin'
Back to Memphis
Memphis is the place that I love
Back to Memphis
Back to memphis
It's the place that I love
Back to Memphis
