I wrote a line about a bed, toast and crumbs and had an idea for a shuffle rhythm and jazzy ooh and aah harmonies. It took off from there: the words were written in an hour, and the whole thing took five days of fairly intensive work to complete. I added the rocky vocal, as an alternative last chorus, for fun, not really thinking I would use it. I'd always wanted to fade out the backing, leaving vocals and guitar to end the song alone, but never had the right song or the technology to do it convincingly 'til now. The song comprises of: a chopped up drum loop, bass guitar, two acoustic guitar tracks (strums and arpeggios), arpeggio electric guitar, 2 hammond organs, 14 harmony tracks, and some ethereal sounds; The sax solo on day five (Friday 27th January 2006) was the finishing touch.
Verse 1
I watch you, across a crowded messed up bedroom full of ghosts,
Lying on a bed of crumbs from eating toast.
Sunlight beaming, streaming,
Dust-motes spinning, I'm dreaming
Of a nascent sun in a cosmos just begun,
To stop me drowning, to free me;
And you don't seem to see me.
Verse 2
I see you across a crowded, crazy dance-floor full of fun,
Standing in your lover's shoes he left so he could run.
Mirrors flashing, colours splashing,
People pushing and shoving, I'm dreaming
Of wooden boats and weeping willow trees,
A dress that ripples in the breeze.
I'm drowning, won't you free me?
But you don't even see me...
Chorus
Oh roll, roll, roll the dice again -
Snakes are waiting there on every square
But roll the dice again...
Sax solo
Verse 3
I hear you, across a swirling, sultry, dark room full of rum,
Lying on a bed of nails from too much sun.
Music wafting through the window, sleep is winning, I'm dreaming
Of sandstone castles and vines,
Of moonlight through the pines,
To stop me drowning, to free me;
And you don't seem to need me...
Chorus
Oh roll, roll, roll the dice again -
(Oh, yeah, come on and roll the dice again)
Maybe snakes are there on every square
But roll the dice again...
(Oh, let me roll it)
Maybe snakes are waiting there on every square
But roll the dice...
