Story behind the song
Ironman was written back in 2002 at a time when Mat and I were trying to complete our first self produced album. We had given ourselves a deadline and found we only had one month left to complete the album. We had around 15 songs that were near completion and needed that time to mix. We were trying to find a change for a song called Let me stay , when Mat pulled out this incredible rift. I turned to him and said that’s a new song. With one month to go we both looked at each other and thought we aint got time to make another song!. Anyway I took that rift loaded it on the computer and created a song around that one powerful rift. Mat came back the next week and created inspirational guitar in and around the intros , verses, choruses and what I think is his coolest lead break. The song instantly became our favourite. Where All I Wanted was a cool pop song…..this was our rock anthem. It’s funny how Mats rifts create a mood for the story. The song is about going for it. Doing what you believe in and never giving up. It really fitted what we were trying to do with our new album and where we were trying to take our music. No excuses..lets go for it!. The chorus line “I’m a stone faced Ironman” sums that up. Anyways as I was writing the lyrics I came to realize how this song fit’s everything my Father was. He passed away in 97 from a disease that was incurable but never showed any pain and was strong to the end. The second verse was for him… “I’ve got no time to be standing here, waiting here, I’m made of Iron. My hands are steel, stronger I can feel, I show no pain, aint got time for pain…” My hands are steel is in reference to my Dads hands, they were huge working class hands. The “aint got time for pain “ is a line stolen from the movie Predator when Jessie Ventura said that classic line “I aint got time to bleed” a line that lent itself to the song. Now that we are in a different place in 2006 the song has been re-written into a 3 min 30sec single where as before it was 5 min 25. It’s a song that is dear to us and one that we feel will be a inspirational song, a sports anthem, a no excuses get up and go rocker.. and one that will be amazing live. In fact it would probably open the show. Anyway there it is, a little insight into the song.
