Story behind the song
I work with Seniors. Seeing how the aging process affects men so much more than women, I was thinking about the cultural thing we have about what a man really is. This is a tribute to my dad, and all the other real men in this world that grow old.
Lyrics
What Is A Man? In the last year of his life Amidst his daughters and his wife He said, “ There’s not much more that I can stand I can’t do those things that made me a man.” “There’s no point in going on Wish I was already dead and gone!” This can’t really be in God’s plan? What good am I, I’m no longer a man!” 1st chorus: Woman, what is that man to you? Is it only the things he can do You better let him know before his life’s through What it is he really means to you! It was just a short walk to the car But he couldn’t even make it that far In his eyes I could see his tears Never saw my Daddy cry in his years Those strong hands that had done so much Those hands that had a soft gentle touch Now shook fiercely out of control And it shook me too, down in my soul 2nd Chorus: Daughter, what is that man to you? Is it only the things he can do You better let him know before his life’s through What it is he really means to you! You may know what it’s like to be young But something I want to tell you son Only as your story is told Will you know what it’s like to be old People when you see him crossing the street Moving slowly, shuffling his feet I want you all to hear and understand There still walks a very real man. 3rd chorus What is that man to you? Is it only the things he can do Here’s the facts, hard but true Someday son, that man will be you
