Story behind the song
When I was a very young Christian I used to wonder why God demanded our worship. Such a demand seemed incompatible with the humble nature of Jesus. I set the thought aside, assuming that there would come a day when I would understand. One day, several years later, I was singing in the choir and our closing hymn was "Holy, Holy, Holy". As I was singing the line about casting the crowns along the glassy sea I had a vivid image in my mind of being one among millions removing my crown and placing it before the Lord, realizing the crown belongs to Him and not to me. Needless to say I was unable to finish singing the song. This image answered my question. God commands us to worship Him because it is essential for us to understand that He alone is worthy. Were it not for His love, His life, and His sacrifice, we would be hopelessly lost and only in turning to Him do we find life. The lyrics to the bridge in Casting My Crown are taken from the song of the saints in Rev. 15.
Lyrics
Wearing the white of the Lamb, I stand beside the sea. A crown is in my hand, though it wasn’t earned by me. Among the saints I wait, with eager expectation, For the King of Kings, and Lord of Lords, Has come to rule the nations. I am casting my crown, before the glassy sea. For my crown belongs to you Lord, it was never earned by me, You bestowed it in love, and sustained it with your grace. I am casting my crown Lord as I meet you face to face. Hearing the sound of your name, I bow before the throne For you are worthy Lord, all creation is your own. You purchased with your blood, the humble and the lowly. And I praise you Lord, with all my heart For you alone are Holy. I am casting my crown, before the glassy sea. For my crown belongs to you Lord, it was never earned by me, You bestowed it in love, and sustained it with your grace. I am casting my crown Lord as I meet you face to face. Great and wondrous are your deeds, Our Lord God Almighty. Just and true your ways, O King of the ages. Who will fail to fear You Lord, or glorify Your Name? For you alone are Holy, And the nations bow before you, To worship and adore you, Because your righteousness has been revealed. I am casting my crown, before the glassy sea. For my crown belongs to you Lord, it was never earned by me, You bestowed it in love, and sustained it with your grace. I am casting my crown Lord as I meet you face to face.
