I wrote this song to/about a friend who was going through a painful break-up. Since I have been in a stable marriage myself for 25 years, I wrote the song from the perspective of a mutual friend who's been through the same thing several times.
Heartache Refugee
Hello my friend why you lookin’ down
I’ve grown accustomed to your smile
But now you mope around and wear a frown
And spend your nights in self-exile
All these years I’ve seen your life go up and down
You’ve seen the best and worst of me
And now I see you’re looking through the lost and found
Another heartache refugee
You know I’ve been there once or twice before
I know exactly how you feel
If I may use a well-worn metaphor
I think you got a dirty deal
All these years I’ve seen your life go round and round
And you have seen both sides of me
And now I see that this has turned you upside down
Another heartache refugee
I know you’ve tried
I know you’ve cried
I’ve seen with it my own two eyes
I’m on your side
I know she lied
Still I hate to see you agonize
But don’t you worry now my dear old friend
You know like all things this shall pass
It doesn’t mean that you have reached the end
Your time will come to you at last
All these years I’ve seen your life go up and down
You’ve seen the best and worst of me
And now I see that this has turned you upside down
Another heartache refugee
And now I see you lying in the lost and found
Another heartache refugee
Another refugee like me
