Story behind the song
During a period in the summer of 1997, I was living with Dai in Bogor, Indonesia, staying at some friends’ house while they were on vacation. Every morning she would go to work and I would sit with my guitar and write songs—every day. This is one of those songs, brought on one morning by recollection of a scene in the movie “Harold and Maud.” At the end of that film, Harold stages one last suicide by driving his car off a cliff. As the camera pans back to the top of the cliff, there is Harold with the banjo given to him by Maud, picking out a tune by Cat Stevens that accompanies the sound track. As he picks the banjo, he leaps into the air and clicks his heals together—freeze. The film ends on a happy note. But this song made it onto the CD only at the last minute, due to one last session with Michael to mix-down “Sunrise at Bromo,” the last song on the CD. I had borrowed friend Mike Byers’ six-string banjo, hoping to have a chance to record “Just a Happy Song” with Michael. He took to the banjo like a fish to water, and in less than an hour we had it on tape.
Lyrics
Just a Happy Song There are times you get so down, you wear a constant frown, think you’re gonna drown You can kiss those times goodbye, right now I feel so high, think I’m gonna fly So let’s not wallow in our pain, you can rest your weary brain, by singin’ in the rain So come on don’t be so glum, here’s a tune you all can hum, we shall overcome I’ve got this urge to sing, I feel as if I’m king Not a care about anything, today it feels like spring I’ve got this urge to dance, as though I’m in a trance I think I’ll take a chance, and make the best of circumstance All it takes to change your mood, is a shift in attitude, like dancin’ in the nude So put on a happy smile, it’s time to change your style, whistle all the while You got no time for feelin’ blue, but now it’s up to you, you can pull on through So come on and sing along, it’s just a happy song, you really can’t go wrong I’ve got this urge to sing, I feel as if I’m king Not a care about anything, today it feels like spring I’ve got this urge to dance, as though I’m in a trance I think I’ll take a chance, and make the best of circumstance I got this urge to scrawl, a happy song for all I sometimes feel so gray, oh but not today I got an urge to write, the sun is shining bright I got no dues to pay, I think I’ll go outside and play It’s a brand new day, take a little chance, go ahead and dance
