Just an average working man
Eight ‘til five down at the plant
And when he gets home it’s time for her to leave
She’s working nights at a local cafe
Doesn’t see much of him these days
But they need the money to try and make ends meet
The bills come daily and the mortgage is due
Taxes are up so what else is new
The kids need new clothes to go to school
The way that it is
They fight the good fight
And they’ve learned to give
They love each other
Man, that’s the way that it is
They face life’s struggles one day at a time
Everyday is an uphill climb
And easy street is a long long way from here
Still they manage to get by
With a little left over once in awhile
Maybe someday they’ll see their way clear
It’s not the life that they had planned
But they’re doing the best that they can
It’s just the way that it is and they understand
The way that it is
They fight the good fight
And they’ve learned to give
They love each other
Man, that’s the way that it is
The way that it is
They fight the good fight
And they’ve learned to give
They love each other
Man, that’s the way that it is
They love each other
Man, that’s the way that it is
They love each other
Man, that’s the way that it is
That’s the way
