cover of toto classic 80s synth soft rock
David Paich wrote the lyrics inspired by the love of African music and cultural imigary even though he never went to Africa.
I recorded it as part of my 80s bucket list songs. I can honestly say it's one of the hardest songs i've had to learn and record. I've always loved the song but having never performed it live , didn't realise how complexed it was from the percussion , synth work and tones right up to the many layers of vocal harmonies which were really tough to get right and really high in parts ! It could be seen to be in 3 keys ! the main part in B major , the chorus in A major and A lydian comes in some parts ! I've dropped it down half a tone for my old voice ! not your average pop song !
I hope i've done it justice.
I hear the drums echoing tonight
she hears only whispers of some quiet conversation
she's coming in 12.30 flight
The moonlit wings reflect the stars that guide me toward salvation
I stopped an old man along the way
hoping to find some old forgotten words or ancient melodies
He turned to me as if to say "hurry boy , it's waiting there for you "
Gonna take a lot to drag me away from you
There's nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do
I bless the rains down in Africa
Gonna take some time to do the things we never had
Ooo Ooo
The wild dogs cry out in the night
As they grow restless longing for some solitary company
I know that I must do what's right
As sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serengeti
I seek to cure what's deep inside
Frightened of this thing that I've become
Gonna take a lot to drag me away from you
There's nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do
I bless the rains down in Africa
Gonna take some time to do the things we never had
Ooo Ooo
Music interlude
"hurry boy, she's waiting there for you"
It's gonna take a lot to drag me away from you
There's nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do
I bless the rains down in africa
I bless the rains down in Africa ( I bless the rains)
I bless the rains down in Africa (I bless the rains)
I bless the rains down in Africa
I bless the rains down in Africa ( Ooo I'm gonna take the time )
Gonna take the time to do the things we never had
Ooo Ooo
