Story behind the song
"Those Were the Days" is a song credited to Gene Raskin, who put a new English lyric to the Russian romance song "Dorogoi dlinnoyu" , literally "By the long road"), composed by Boris Fomin (19001948) with words by the poet Konstantin Podrevsky123. The song was first released by Carroll O'Connor and Jean Stapleton in 1971. It was also written by Charles Strouse and Lee Adams specifically for All in the Family.
