Story behind the song
After WWI my grandmother was sent from Italy to marry a man in the US she had never met. When she got here, and saw him, she refused. They told her she'd either have to be married or she'd be returned to Italy. During the argument, she made eye contact with a man, pointed at him and said, "That is the man I want to marry. “ As it turned out one of the people in the household where she was staying knew the man and brought him in to meet her. That was my grandfather. They were married until he died in 1959. She spent the next 20 years missing him. It was the definition of love at first sight.
Lyrics
1919 2022 Phil Berbig The whole world started changing, it was 1919 The greatest of wars was fading along with the fates of kings and queens A pretty young woman boarded a boat meant to take her across the sea And her whole world started changing in 1919 A man was waiting somewhere in a land she’d never known She was sent to make him a wife and to make this land her own She stepped off the boat and looked at his face as she saw him for the very first time But there was no love in this man when she looked into his eyes Chorus: And some things never can change Love can never be explained Some people search their whole life and some find it fast But the lucky ones are the ones who find a love strong enough to last She said she would not marry him, they said you must go home A foreign woman in America just can’t be here alone She cried and turned and caught the eye of a man and they fell in love The kind of love that old time poets, sometimes write of My Gandpa died in ’59, the year that I was born Grandma told us stories of the man that she adored In that one moment they both fell in love and nothing ever came between Their whole world had changed that day in 1919
