The definitive country anthem on that all-girl trio we love to hate.
Just as the war in Iraq was kicking off, so was a controversy between our President and an all-girl Bluegrass band who had just recorded "Travelin' Soldier," a song that was ironically climbing the charts because of fans' support for our troops in the Middle East poised to fight. This is a song about that controversy.
Did you ever stop to wonder why
Travelin' Soldier had to die?
Why couldn't he 've come back home to that girl he loved?
Get out...to those wide open spaces,
Look into the faces
Of the country folk who put you where you are.
You bit the hand that fed you,
Went a ways down a road that led you
Bout a mile and a half south of Girl, you've gone too far.
We ain't Hollywood actors;
We drive John Deere tractors,
Trust in God, Country and our President.
Back where I come from,
We're country, but we ain't dumb;
We don't need Diane Sawyer to explain what ashamed meant.
(CHORUS)
You got the right to speak your mind
Any place and any time,
And we got the right
To reach up and turn you off.
Just so you know,
We remember you--
You and the Alamo.
We like country music singers
Not Berkley left wingers;
We've warshed mouths out with soap
For much less dirt.
You went from landslide to landfill,
Fair-haired girl to roadkill;
Last I saw
Looked like you lost your shirt.
(CHORUS)
Just so you know,
We remember you--
You and the Alamo.
Just put me on your hit list
With Toby Keith and Travis Tritt,
Sony, Tony Blair--
and all the good folks over there,
Laura Lynch who could o' saved us all;
Was she too old or her mouth too small?
All the fans who looked up to you--
God help them little girls,
Travelin' Soldier, Dubya and Earl.
We interrupt this country song
With news hot off the wire:
Travelin' Soldier killed by friendly fire.
You got the right to speak your mind
Any place and any time,
And we got the right
To reach up and turn you off...
