Story behind the song
Sung by a Ranger and his pet myna Jester in another dimension. It's a song about Pride, and the need to see our own end. Not to get depressed, really, but to consider the future, and then search for the truth. For from dust we have come, and to dust we shall return, and our hope lies in our Maker, not in our own strength.
Lyrics
The mountain stood silent for eons untold While the riches within him were gathered and sold Till one day his mines were all empty and spent And the miners all packed up their tents, their tents, The miners all packed up their tents. And the mountain, he rumbled, too deep to be heard But the redwood beside him caught every last word As the ancient old titan, he bowed his great head And from caverns within him, he said The wind and the rain, they have weathered my crown And year after year they are wearing me down And I watch as the centuries haul me away Till I end up just sand in the bay, in the bay Till I end up just sand in the bay. Time wears us away till we turn into dust Worn out and used up and covered with rust But Ill be content with what Im meant to be Till Im washed by the rain to the sea, to the sea, For we all end up sand by the sea. But the redwood, she shivered, and tossed her great head Ill stand here forever, and grow greater instead Ill never quit growing till Im taller than you And play games of tag with the moon, the moon For Ill play games of tag with the moon For Im mighty, majestic, and tall as the sky And theres nothing around that is greater than I And the moon, though hes smaller, swings by through the air So Ill reach up and play with him there, with him there Ill reach up and play with him there. But the woodcutters came and they cut down the tree And on her great branches, she rolled to the sea She became a great ship, for many a year But if you listened to her, then youd hear: Time wears us away till we turn into dust Worn out and used up and covered with rust But Ill be content with what Im meant to be Till Im washed by the rain to the sea, to the sea, For we all end up sand by the sea.
