Story behind the song
This song tells the true story of an angelic encounter in the mountains of southern California that I experienced when I was a teenager in high school.I believe I was called to write this song after crossing paths with an angel years ago.
Lyrics
It was just another weekend there was nothin' much to do For two restless teenage rebels who never even had a clue My friend stopped by to see me showin' off his grampa's car He was shoutin' "Let's go cruisin', get away from where we are" So we headed for the mountains just the biggest goal in sight We were off to seek adventure whether it was wrong or right Burnin' rubber up the canyon in a worn-out Oldsmobile Embracin' wild abandon with the devil at the wheel Climbin' up was far too easy but on the way down from the top We were speedin' through the hair-pins with those steep and scary drops So high above the raging river winding far below Oblivious to the future one that we could never know There are times of His own choosin' when mysteries are revealed The curtains are pulled back from where the secrets are concealed It happens in those moments you're least likely to expect On days of foolish revelry when common sense is easy to reject Well my psycho friend was laughin' as we skidded through the curves I shouted to him "Slow down man, you're gettin' on my nerves!" Then the brakes they started smokin' and the peddle turned to mush We were slidin' towards disaster when there came an eerie hush Just when it seemed like all was lost the road opened on the right We slammed into a pile of dirt and it stopped us what a sight! As we sat there breathin' heavy wonderin' now what will we do? A man crawled up from the cliff side sayin' "How can I help you?" Yes he must've been about ninety and he held a curious cane "Aren't you too old to be up here?" We asked "Are you insane?!" "No, I come here all the time." He said "I just love a mountain hike" "For a ride down I can help you, fix your troubles if you'd like." Angel on the mountain giving destiny a push It might be a troubled fountain or it could be a burning bush When it's time for intervention somethin' odd might do the trick God just may get your attention with an old man and his crazy walkin' stick So I slid into the back seat as he sat down in the front He said "You're both anxious to go but trust me, that's not what you want" "You've got to let the brakes cool down; you'll just have to wait awhile." Then he turned around and looked at me with a reassurin' smile And as we sat there chillin' he was talking with my friend Explainin' how to use the gears to slow down in the bends He told him you must drive with care and go easy on the brakes A little bit of patience and some wisdom's all it takes So once we gave the car a rest we continued our descent And he coached my reckless driver friend with instructions as we went But strangely every now and then he'd look at me and stare "Keep your eyes on the Middle East" He'd Say "It's all gonna happen there" There are times of His own choosin' when mysteries are revealed The curtains are pulled back from where the secrets are concealed It happens in those moments you're least likely to expect On days of foolish revelry when common sense is easy to reject Now my friend never seemed to notice when the man would talk with me And speak his warning words so clear with the utmost urgency "Just keep your eyes on Israel that's where it will take place" He'd say again as his eyes looked so intensely at my face. Then finally we were down and asked "Where can we take you sir" "Oh you can drop me off right here that's what I'd most prefer" So we pulled up to the curbside in a friendly neighborhood "Thanks for offerin' us your help." We said "Most strangers never would." As he strolled on up the sidewalk we exchanged our last goodbyes And it was just for one brief moment that we turned away our eyes As I climbed out from the back into the front seat on the right We looked again to see him but somehow he had vanished from our sight!
