A simple ballad about... something, I guess.
The genesis of this song came to me one day while just playing around on guitar. I admit I have no idea what it's really about. It would seem to be describing a difficult relationship, and while finishing up the lyrics I did try to move it in that direction. But the relevance of the starting point literally came out of nowhere.
The recording is straightforward enough - drums, bass, doubled up acoustic, a bit of piano and an electric guitar picking out a simple pattern. The vocal is doubled up in the middle eight. I didn't want to add a lot of ornamentation or drag it out too long, so it just comes in, says what it wants to say, then gets out. Simple.
How are you when you are lonely?
How are you when you’ve had a fall?
How do you sound when you are hungry?
Do you make any noise at all?
I don’t know how you will answer
I don’t know what you might say
I don’t know what you consider
To be the truth in any way
Would you tell me when you’re sleeping
What it means to wake up scared?
Would you call me when you’re dreaming
Of a life lived unprepared?
I don’t know how you will answer
I don’t know what you might say
I don’t know what you consider
To be the truth in any way
I’d like to discover
What’s behind your eyes
I’d want to uncover
What lies beneath your disguise
Why does nothing last forever?
Until you try to let it go?
When does someday turn to never?
Why am I the last to know?
I don’t know how you will answer
I don’t know what you might say
I don’t know what you consider
To be the truth in any way
