V1
Lived in West Virginia, near a grove of chestnut trees,
Every day I crossed the river, to earn my bread and cheese,
Saw the barges making way, carrying ore and coal,
Deep down in that hollow’s not the place you wanna grow old
In the river valley …….
Chorus 1
The night lit up with an eerie glow
From the making of the steel,
And the people loved their jobs and cash,
Whiskey, beer, and wheels,
In the river valley…….
V2
The work was hard but the raises came, it was green ‘til the snow would fly,
Then 6 months of misery, everyday life was a trial,
But the people kept on making steel,
they put up with the cold,
Deep down in that hollow’s not the place you wanna grow old
In the river valley…….
Chorus 1
Bridge
And then one day they told us,
That someone took our jobs,
The mill will soon be closing,
The peoples’ lives been robbed,
In the river valley…….
Chorus 2
The night was quiet with a moonlit glow,
But no one’s making steel,
The people have no jobs or cash,
Food stamps buy their meals,
In the river valley……..
