Story behind the song
How absurd so many wise sayings are, when considered from the viewpoint of a disabled person. I had no idea that a fool's paradise was an attempted explanation as to where disabled people might go after their death, rather than normal heaven, but apparently this used to be the case. The "I won't be scared" bit is inspired by someone I supported in the course of my work, words she spoke a few days before she died. RIP Sylvia
Lyrics
Beauty is only skin deep, can't judge a book by its cover. If first impressions are the ones you keep, you're the beholder tell me what do you see? I've had sticks and stones that broke my bones, been called names that nearly killed me, I speak body language fluently, I know what you're saying before you start to speak, But I wasn't scared then, I'm not scared now, and remember when I told you how, I won't be scared when the lights go out.... There's method in my madness, a paradise of fools is waiting, there but for the grace of god on high, not you and yours, but go me and mine. It's the early bird that gets the worm, it's why I'm always hungry, the good lord helps those who help themselves, I've got a wolf at my door and empty shelves. But I wasn't scared then, I'm not scared now, and remember when I told you how, I won't be scared when the lights go out.... What doesn't kill me makes me stronger, to carry the whole world on my shoulders. What can't be cured must be endured, it's the part I play in this theatre of the absurd. You can have too much of a bad thing, you've got to soldier on until the fat lady sings. If I could have one thing in life, to go out of my mind, out of sight.... But I wasn't scared then, I'm not scared now, and remember when I told you how, I won't be scared when the lights go out....
