Story behind the song
Sitting alone at sunset about a year after she left, the melody just started playing in my head. It kept it up for about two weeks, and then I finally relented and picked up the National and recorded it as I had heard it.
Lyrics
Funny that you'd be lookin' for the lyrics of an instrumental. Well I'm not the kind who would disappoint anyone knowingly; so here are some words for you to sing along with. (You can make up your own lyrics for the 2nd and 3rd verses and the bridge): Hardly Comes a Day Hardly... hardly comes a day; That I don't do some thinkin', 'bout the way it used to be; And then do a little drinkin', but just one or twenty-three; I had it all, and I let it slip away; Now hardly, hardly comes a day..."
