I was a bit perturbed by a news report about a high school aged girl who was deeply offended to see prayer groups at her school and sued to make them "go away". I myself am an agnostic, so it's not like I'm a "Bible-thump-er", but I find the intolerance of atheists to be as arrogant and undignified as the "better than thou" attitude of the fanatically religious.
There is something empty and morose in the psychology of someone who finds the expressions of faith of others to be grotesque and offensive. What harm does it do to you to see a belief you don't share?
Afterall, do you cringe when you see Native Americans performing their ceremonies? How about Hindus? Or to see Budhists meditating?
Would she be so quick to criticize a Muslim wearing a hijab and saying prayers? Is the attitude therefore reserved only for Christianity?
This song was born from weeks of contemplating the psychology of that young lady.
It begins with a somewhat "airy" and lush arrangement that I hope communicates the sad psychological state of emptiness one would have to possess to think her way. It then switches to a slightly angrier tone, and yes, just a little mocking as I express my revulsion at her mentality.
She believes in Nothin’

She believes in Nothin’
Nothin’s never let her down
Nothin’ for her to plan for
So nothin’s gonna lead her off course
She believes in Nothin’
Nothin’ can take that away
Nothin’s really something to live for
Nothin’s gonna knock her off her horse
Chorus
She believes in Nothin’
And Nothin’s gonna fill her heart
When you’ve got a whole lot of nothing
Nothin never turns into something
That’ll turn around and tear you apart
She believes that Nothin’
Is like nothin’ that you’ve ever seen
Nothin’ hereafter and nothin’ before
There is no greater force
Chorus
She believes in Nothin’
And Nothin’s gonna fill her heart
When you’ve got a whole lot of nothing
Nothin never turns into something
That’ll turn around and tear you apart
The girl’s nothin’ but trouble
Beelzebub’s favorite pet
And she’s nothin’ but heartbreak
She breaks every heart she’s met
She’s about as cuddly
As a puppy dog covered in piss
And when she finally meets her maker
She won’t be sorely missed
She stays at home and moans and groans
She’s so offended by the faithful
It cuts her to the bone
She’s the darlin’ of the Left
Tells her lawyer she’s bereft
She’s gonna sue the whole damn world
Until there’s Nothin’ left
She believes in Nothin’
And Nothin’s gonna fill her heart
When you’ve got a whole lot of nothing
Nothin never turns into something
That’ll turn around and tear you apart
