Story behind the song
Zan asked me if I could do music for his 'sea chantey' lyric. I listened to a few chanteys, and used my accordion to come up with this.
Lyrics
Widow of the Wind Cantwell/Siegel- 2008 There's a story that's told in this old harbor town When children are sleeping and the lamps are turned down They whisper in the shadows as the rain hits the tin The tragic dark tale," the widow of the wind" Molly was the daughter of Parson Mcphee She danced in the waves round the "Chapel ‘o’ the Sea" The good parson loved Molly more than his own life He vowed she’d not be a poor fisherman’s wife Curse you blue northerns that fill up their sails Damn these cold waters that spawn the great whales I pray my dear Molly won’t suffer my sins And be chained to this ocean and a widow of the wind Daniel Fitzsimons had a mighty right arm He could toss a harpoon almost sixty yards All the ladies in town tried to turn Daniel’s head But t'was Molly McPhee he swore someday to wed The Parson, no fool saw the way their eyes met And the vow that he’d made he could not forget He made secret plans to send Molly away To a convent in France, just south of Calais Curse you blue northerns that fill up his sails Damn these cold waters that spawn the great whales Heartache and sorrow are all that you bring Leave me chained to this ocean a widow of the wind They both slipped away while the Parson was gone And got married in Bedford by the mayor of the town Daniel kissed her goodbye as he boarded his ship Took with him to sea the sweet taste of her lips Was a deck hand from Portsmouth told a sad tale Of a lancer keel hauled by a monstrous white whale Molly watched the horizon each day and each night But six long months passed with no vessel in sight Curse you blue northerns that fill up his sails Damn these cold waters that spawn the great whales Heartache and sorrow are all that you bring Leave me chained to this ocean a widow of the wind They say that she walked to the sea and was drowned And her bonnet and slippers were all that was found Some still see her lamplight glow neath the tides And the night birds that circle seem to echo her cries Curse you blue northerns that fill up his sails Damn these cold waters that spawn the great whales The full moon only shines down its light on my sins Keeps me chained to this ocean a widow of the wind
